DC San Diego Comic Con 2017 Recap

DC made quite the showing at San Diego Comic Con this past weekend. I am going to go over all of the  biggest news that was revealed at the show.

Just to make this clear, I was not at the convention, I am just going over what I’ve heard happened from various news websites and articles. The panel started with a sizzle reel of the first four DCEU movies so far. They then went over all of the upcoming movies that they are working on, and showed the logos for those movies. The upcoming movies are, in no particular order, Wonder Woman 2, Batgirl, The Batman, Green Lantern Corps, Shazam!, Justice League Dark, Aquaman, and The Flash: Flashpoint. After that, Jason Mamoa showed up and showed footage from Aquaman. It has been described as Star Wars underwater.

The Justice League cast came on stage and talked about their experience with the movie. The biggest thing that came out of that was that Ben Affleck said he is the luckiest man in the world to play Batman after being asked if the rumors were true is he was quitting playing the character. The cast then showed the four minute trailer to the movie, and it was amazing! I love how the characters are showcased in the trailer. It smartly starts with Wonder Woman, most likely because of the success of her solo movie. The Flash is hilarious, Batman is great as always, and their Aquaman is different than we see him in the comics. However, I love how his character is portrayed. The trailer has a very epic feel, and it reminds me of the Justice League from the comics.

Following the trailer, they just answered fan questions and ended the Warner Bros. panel. I’m glad to see that DC has a somewhat complete slate of movie they have in production, even though they don’t have dates. They have done a great job with restructuring their universe after all of the problems they’ve had. The interesting movie is Flashpoint. In case you don’t know, Flashpoint is a comic book storyline when Barry Allen goes back in time and saves his mother from being killed. When he gets back to the present, everything has changed. Batman is Thomas Wayne, because Joe Chill shot Bruce Wayne, and Martha becomes the Joker. Basically, he finds a way to go back and let his mom die. When he goes back to the supposed normal present, things are still different. Everybody is five years younger, Clark  Kent isn’t Superman yet, and the overall status quo of the comics changed. It was really a way for DC to reboot completely.

I hope that they aren’t doing this to do a soft reboot. The Hollywood Reporter did say that Warner Bros. was trying to find a way to gracefully usher Ben Affleck out of the Batman role, and Flashpoint makes sense to do that. Remember, Affleck never said he was going to stay as Batman, he just said he is lucky and happy in the role. The film could just change aspects of the Flash since it is a Flash movie, but Flashpoint always changes the entire universe. I’m fine with DC doing Flashpoint, but I don’t see why they are doing it so soon.

Overall I think DC did a great job with assuring us they know what they are doing with the DCEU with a great trailer and a slate of movies to look forward to.

‘Black Panther’ Teaser Trailer is Released

Marvel’s Black Panther just got its first trailer during Game Four of the NBA Finals.

The trailer starts out with a conversation between Andy Serkis playing Ulysses Klaue from Avengers: Age of Ultron and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross who was introduced img_1010in Captain America: Civil War.

Klaue asks Ross what he knows about Wakanda. OSS responds that it’s a third world country. Klaue tells him that everything he knows is a front, and that it is really a highly technologically advanced civilization.

We then see a scene with a group looking around in the woods. They look up and see Black Panther in the trees, and he uses his powers to take them out. The rest of the trailer is mostly various shots of the movie with some good music behind it.

The first takeaway from the trailer, for me, was how amazing Wakanda looks. It looks very high tech and sleek. I really love the design. Stylistically the movie looks pleasing. People say that it looks the same as most Marvel movies, but I would disagree due to the use of img_1012costumes and sets with it being set in Africa. The action looks stellar so far, and Michael B. Jordan’s character looks really cool. If you look close, you can see a shot of him fighting.

My only complaint with the trailer was the last scene where Black Panther jumps over the car. The scene didn’t looks finished, therefore taking away some of the awe of the scene. But, they have plenty of time to fix that.

Overall, now I’m even more excited to see Black Panther. He was set up very well as a character in Civil War, and I hope this movie does a good job of continuing his story.
