Ben Affleck as Batman and Why I’ve Stopped Caring

In case you didn’t hear, in an interview at Fenway Park, Casey Affleck discussed his brother, Ben Affleck, as Batman. While talking he said, “He’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think. Sorry to say.” Now, many people are saying that he was joking when saying this, but that’s not the point today.

Ben Affleck’s involvement in the DCEU has been a rocky journey. If you look at the past of everything that has been said about him and this solo Batman movie, it’s really hard to take anything they say seriously.

  • Ben Affleck is Directing The Batman
  • January 10, 2017 – Ben Affleck says the movie is going well
  • January 30, 2017 – Ben Affleck will not direct The Batman
  • January 31, 2017 – Matt Reeves is frontrunner to direct
  • February 10, 2017 – Matt Reeves to direct
  • February 17, 2017 – Matt Reeves leaves the project
  • February 23, 2017 – Matt Reeves back on to direct
  • July 21, 2017 – Warner Bros. looking to usher Ben Affleck out of the DCEU
  • July 22, 2017 – Ben Affleck says he loves being Batman at Comic Con
  • August 18, 2017 – Casey Affleck says Ben Affleck will not be in The Batman

This has gotten to the point where I won’t believe anything that is said until I sit in the theater and see the credits for the movie. I’m just tired of hearing stories every week saying that either Affleck is happy being Batman, that he’s leaving, that he’s staying for one more movie, or that ht’e even doing a whole trilogy. At this point, I just don’t care. Don’t get me wrong, I really loved Ben Affleck as Batman. He was my absolute favorite part of Batman v Superman. If it were up to me, I’d have him stay forever in the role. But, with all these rumors and news stories coming out, I just can’t deal with it anymore. Until Ben Affleck or Warner Bros. definitively says that he absolutely will play Batman, I’m not going take the res of these statements with a grain of salt. So, if you want to know what I think of what Casey Affleck said, I guess it could be true. They are brothers so he probably knows certain things about him, but there is a good chance he was joking. I don’t have much to say other than that.

What do you think of Ben Affleck being Batman? Do you think he will stay? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

‘Transformers’ Spinoff ‘Bumblebee’ Release Date and Cast Announced

Now that Michael Bay has left the Transformers franchise, they will be making some spinoff movies. The first of which will be Bumblebee, releasing on December 21, 2018.

The head of LAIKA and director of Kubo and the Two Strings, Travis Knight, will direct the film. It will star Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Pamela Aldon, Stephen Schenider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

Paramount also released the following synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

The fact that the movie will be directed by Travis Knight intrigues me. I haven’t been able to bring myself to sit down and watch any of the transformers movies yet, but I’m aware of how bad they are. Despite that, I really loved the LAIKA animated film, Kubo and the Two Strings. I thought it might have even been the best animated film of last year. To see that he will be taking on the spinoff is certainly interesting. Also, Hailee Steinfled is starring which also shines some positive light on the film.

The release date isn’t the best though. Aquaman releases that same weekend, and Mary Poppins Returns comes out five days later. I’d rather see Aquaman open separately so both movies have some breathing room, and I think they’d both benefit from that. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the movies changed release dates. Audiences are starting to show some Transformers fatigue based on the poor performance of Transformers: The Last Knight. It only made $128 million domestic and $568 million worldwide. That is a drastic difference from its predecessor. Transformers: Age of Extinction which brought in $245 million domestic and $1.1 billion worldwide.

As tired as I am of the Transformers movies, I can’t help but be intrigued by the director and cast. The movie might not be good, but it certainly has potential to go a different direction than the previous installments . I just hope Aquaman doesn’t suffer from it opening on the same weekend.

Box Office Report

July 28-30 Weekend Box Office Report

This weekend’s box office is very interesting. The Emoji Movie opened, but with critical hate following behind it. Many critics are saying it is the worst movie of the year, and it has a terrible 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. I was hoping that it would not do well so studios would see that movies with dumb concepts and are clearly product placement aren’t just guaranteed to do well. My wish was granted because it was barely beat by Dunkirk for the number one spot.

Christopher Nolan’s World War II film made $28 million at the box office this weekend taking a 44% drop from last weekend’s $50 million opening. Its total gross is now $102.8 million. This proves how a director definitely can sell a movie, especially Nolan, who is one of the greatest director working today.

In the number two spot we have The Emoji Movie earning $25.6 million. This is probably very disappointing for Sony as they most likely expected a higher opening for a movie about something as recognizable as emojis. This shows that it takes more than a familiar concept to make a successful film. You have to put in effort and have a great script so the whole family can enjoy it. A good example of this is The Lego Movie. It was a great movie and it opened with $69 million. It’s extremely unlikely for a World War II movie in its second weekend to beat out an animated movie in its opening weekend.

The surprise hit, Girl’s Trip, made the number three spot with $20 million in its second weekend. That means its that domestic gross so far is $65.5 million. It only dropped 35% from its opening weekend. The film has also done great critically as well with 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some people are even calling the movie the best comedy in recent years. Charlize Theron’s new action film, Atomic Blonde, opened at number four with $18.5 million. The movie is directed by David Leitch, who co-directed John Wick and will be directing Deadpool 2.

In the number five spot is Spider-Man: Homecoming earning $13.4 million in its fourth weekend. It’s great to see it hanging on in the top five still. he movie was a great collaborative effort between Sony and Marvel that produced a fun, exciting Spider-Man movie.

  1. Dunkirk                                       $28,130,000
  2. The Emoji Movie                       $25,650,000
  3. Girl’s Trip                                    $20,085,540
  4. Atomic Blonde                           $18,554,000
  5. Spider-Man: Homecoming      $13,450,000

Marvel San Diego Comic Con 2017 Recap

Marvel had a huge show at San Diego Comic Con this past weekend. I’ve already covered DC’s presentation at the convention, and now I will be going over Marvel’s panel.

Cate Blanchett talking about Thor: Ragnarok

Like I said in the DC review, I was not at the convention, and I am just compiling all of the news from various blogs and articles. The panel started with a sketch with Paul Rudd and Michael Pena doing a recap of the past ten years of the MCU. (I hope this is released online) They then showed concept art of Ant-Man and the Wasp, and also revealed the logo for the movie. They showed the new suit for Wasp, which apparently looks more yellow. They showed a smaller Ant-Man riding his daughter’s back, Ant-Man growing and flipping a car over, and a giant Scott Lang peeking around a street corner. They also revealed some new casting for the movie: Hannah John-Kamen will play the Ghost, Randall Park is Agent Jimmy Woo, and finally Laurence Fishburne will be Dr.Bill Foster, aka Goliath.

Next, they showed Captain Marvel concept art. They confirmed that Nick Fury will appear in the movie. It will be set in the 90’s, so Fury will have two eyes, and the villains will be the Skrulls. After that, they had the cast and crew of Thor: Ragnarok talk about the movie. Tom Hiddleston said that Loki has been pretending to be Odin for the past four years. Mark Ruffalo said Hulk refuses to be Bruce Banner because he is a popular gladiator on Sakaar. He also said that because he hasn’t changed into Bruce Banner in two years, Hulk has the vocabulary of a two year old. Something I found interesting was that Jeff Goldblum revealed that his character, the Grandmaster, and the Collector are brothers. They are Elders of the Universe, so they are the oldest living being in the universe. Now, he rules Sakaar and puts on fighting games. They did a Q&A with the fans and showed the new trailer.

Marvel had the Black Panther cast come on stage and talk their experience, and the whole cast seems to be very invested in this movie. You can find what they said online, but they all seem to understand their characters really well. Ryan Coogler, the director, said he walked into a comic store, asked what he should buy, and was given Black Panther. They also showed some footage, which they made clear would not be released online, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. It’s been described as a James Bond like scene with T’Challa and Okoye tracking Ulysses Klaw, and then fighting afterwards. Also, apparently Klaw has a robotic arm… that’s cool. Then, as expected, they showed that famous trailer for Avengers: Infinity War that they showed at D23.

All of this news is pretty exciting. I guess Laurence Fishburne left DC, because now he’s in Ant-Man and the Wasp. So, don’t expect to see Perry White anytime soon. Seriously though, I am really excited to see the sequel to Ant-Man because of how funny and unexpected that movie was. Captain Marvel being set in the 90’s is interesting, it’ll be nice to see what the MCU was like in that time period. We’ve never had a full movie set in the past. I hope they don’t reveal how Nick Fury lost his eye because I personally want that to stay a mystery, but there is a good chance they will reveal it. I don’t know much about the Skrulls, but it seems like they are a big part of the comics. So, I guess I’ll wait and see.

I’m even more excited for Black Panther now. The first teaser trailer got me very excited to see what Marvel could do with the character. I can’t wait to see what Ryan Coogler can do after his work on the phenomenal Creed. The Thor trailer was amazing! I have’t been a fan of the Thor movies thus far, but but this movie looks like a lot of fun. It seems funny, crazy, wild, and Hulk! They didn’t show Doctor Strange, even though they said he would be in the movie. I don’t want them to, I would rather see him in the movie proper. Marvel always does a great job at Comic Con, they haven’t let me down since Thor: The Dark World in 2013.

Shazam! To Be the Next DCEU Movie

Shazam! will be the next DCEU movie to go into production after Aquaman.

shazam

According to a report from THR, the next film in the DCEU will be Shazam! The movie will stat shooting sometime in January or February, and it will most likely be released in 2019. David F. Sandberg, director of Lights Out and the Annabelle sequel, will helm the film. The report states that in is “unclear” whether Dwane Johnson’s Black Adam will be involved. The article also says that the Suicide Squad sequel is eyeing a mid-2018 start.

I think it’s interesting that they chose Shazam! as the nest movie to start shooting. It does make sense though, because all the other movies have had director and script shakeups. The Flash has had three different directors, and Ben Affleck dropped out of The Batman. Shazam! has stuck with the same director throughout. Shazam isn’t a well known character, so the filmmakers will have a tough job with pitching the character.

Fox Sets 6 Marvel Movie Dates Plus Website Updates

20th Century Fox, the studio responsible for the current X-Men franchise, has set 6 dates for upcoming Marvel movies. The dates are as follows:

June 7, 2019

November 22, 2019

March 13, 2020

June 26, 2020

October 2, 2020

March 5, 2021

Image via 20th Century Fox

I think it’s safe to assume one of these dates is for Deadpool 3, most likely June 2020. One is probably an X Force movie, and we will definitely get a main X-Men movie. The other three are interesting. We could get the scrapped Gambit movie as one of these dates (which no one wants). James Mangold has said he would direct another movie with X-23, so one could involve that. As for the third, it is way too early to even think about. They set these dates pretty far out, especially the 2021 date. I’m not even sure if they know what movies they’re making.
Anyways, Fox has been showing promise with movies like Deadpool and Logan when they try comic book movies that try something different. I hope the future of the X-Men franchise follows that philosophy.

What do you think about these dates? What movies do you think they will make? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I will be incorporating more personal projects on the site instead of doing mainly new stories. This might include review of older movies, rankings, editorials, and more. This will start with reviews of the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies this week in anticipation for Spider-Man: Homecoming. I’ll still cover the news, but I want to do more than just that. If you have any suggestions for things I could do, leave them in the comments. I could really use some suggestions!

Venom Will NOT Be a Part of the MCU

The solo Venom movie has gone through some interesting times with its involvement, or lack there of, in the MCU. In an interview with Collider Tom Holland, Kevin Feige, and Amy Pascal all confirmed that the Sony spinoff Spider-Man universe movies, including the Venom movie, will not be a part of of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Image via Google
This is interesting because last week, Amy Pascal said Venom would be in the universe with Spider-Man: Homecoming after Kevin Feige said they were separate. Tom Holland gave the following statement after being asked if Tom Hardy’s Venom movie was separate from his movie:

“Sadly, I think that is true. From my understanding, I think that is the case. I’d love to make a movie with Tom Hardy. If we ever got the chance to make a Venom movie together, that would be super-cool, but his movie would have to take place in the MCU because I’m not giving up my ticket in the MCU.”

He was then asked if Spider-Man swinging past the screen would establish a shared universe:

“It would. It definitely would. And we’ll have to wait and see what happens. If it did happen, it would be very cool, but as of now, I know nothing about it.”

Amy Pascal was asked to confirm if Spider-Man would appear in any of the spinoffs and she said the following:

“For now, correct. All of them are part of the Marvel comic universe. Not all of them are part of Marvel cinematic universe.”

The entire interview with her and Kevin Feige is linked above.

Image via Marvel Studios
This wasn’t completely unexpected because of the look Kevin Feige made in the interview where Pascal said they would be in the same universe. I would rather them be in the same universe, but this is what comes with Sony owning Spider-Man. The only plus side with this is if the movie fails, it won’t be in the MCU, so they can still put Venom in there. However, that might not happen because Tom Hardy signed on to it, and he is known for being picky with the movies he gets involved with.

This just leaves me wondering what Pascal was thinking when she said Venom was in the MCU. Was she confused? Did we just misinterpret what she was saying? Part of me thinks Sony and Marvel talked about it, and Sony took it as them being together. That probably didn’t happen though.

Image via Marvel Studios
Pascal did say “for now” in her quote. Maybe Marvel is letting Sony test this out, and if it works they will announce that they are in the same universe. I could understand this because Sony is known for botching shared universes (ex. The Amazing Spider-Man 2). I really hope the movie is good. I can’t wait to see Venom and Carnage  fight on the big screen!

What do you think about Venom being separate from the MCU? Do you want them together? Leave your thoughts below.

Carnage To Be The Vilain in Solo Venom Movie

An article from THR states that the solo Venom movie will feature Carnage as the villain. Tom Hardy will star as Eddie Brock, and Ruben Fleischer is set to direct the film. Sony is going for an October 5, 2018 release.

Image via Wikipedia

In the comics, Eddie Brock is a rival of Peter Parker’s at the Daily Bugle. After Spider-Man gets rid of his black symbiotic suit, it finds Eddie Brock and merges with him. Venom has most of Spider-Man’s powers, except he is bigger and stronger. Carnage was a serial killer, Cletus Kassidy, who shared a jail cell with Eddie Brock. Eddie used the symbiote to escape from prison, but a piece of it stayed behind and attached to Kassidy. Carnage has all of Spider-Man’s powers along with strength and shapeshifting.

I still struggle to understand what Sony is doing with these spinoff Spider-Man universe movies. Last week Amy Pascal let it slip that the spinoff movies would be part of the Homecoming universe, despite a confused look from Kevin Feige. I don’t understand why you would want Venom to be in his own movie without Spider-Man. They might be in the same universe, but they shouldn’t be separate.

The last thing we want is for Sony to pull another Amazing Spider-Man 2 and just try a spinoff for every character. They need to listen to Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios and figure out the best story plan before announcing villain movies.

I’m fine with Carnage being the villain in the movie. He makes the most sense for a villain. As upset as I am with Sony’s choices, I am getting excited to see Venom and Carnage fight on the big screen. Tom Hardy signed on to star in the movie, so that means he saw potential in the script, which is verypromising.

Jurassic World 2 Poster and Title Revealed

The poster for the Jurassic World sequel has been revealed.

The movie will be called Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The poster features the tagline “Life finds a way”, quoting Ian Malcom.

The film will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who recently directed A Monster Calls. Colin Trevorrow, director of the first Jurassic World, will produce the film and has a writing credit on it.

The title is interesting. Who knows what Fallen Kingdom means? Colin Trevorrow described the film as “A Spanish horror thriller with dinosaurs.” That is also quite confusing.

I enjoyed Jurassic World, I didn’t think it was great, but it was a fun movie. I hope Bayona brings a different feel to this movie and it turns out to be a great successor to the original Jurassic Park.

What do you think of the title? What do you think it means? Leave your thoughts below!

Chris Terrio Rewrites The Batman Script

Monday, we received the unfortunate news that Ben Affleck will not be directing the solo Batman film. We then thought that he would stay on as star, producer, and writer. We might be slightly wrong about that.

Deadline reports that Chris Terrio has turned in a rewrite for the solo Batman script that Ben Affleck and president/ Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, Geoff Johns.
Chris Terrio has two major credits under his belt: Argo and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He will also write the upcoming Justice League movie this fall. Terrio won an Oscar for best writing, adapted screenplay for Argo, but Batman v Superman‘s main problem was the messy screenplay. Despite that, I am still on board with this.

So, we all know that the problem with Batman v Superman was that they tried to cram too much in one movie. But, I think that Warner Brothers should take the blame for that. They decided to make one movie to set up Justice League, so they would then have to tell Chris Terrio to add all these things into one movie. You can only do so much with that.

The other thing is the Oscar. I honestly haven’t seen Argo yet (I actually have the blu-ray to watch soon) but I’ve heard great things. He won an Oscar, so clearly he has some talent, they don’t just hand those out. That’s why I think it was Warner Brothers that had Terrio add all those things into one movie. I don’t think a writer who has an Oscar would turn in work that messy by choice.

That’s not to say that I didn’t want Ben Affleck to write the script, I would actually rather have that because he has proven to be a better writer. Chris Terrio only has two major movies in his filmography while Ben Affleck also has a best writing Oscar, and even more movies. I really wanted to see his take on The Batman.

Lastly, the scary thing is that someone had to rewrite it. Ben Affleck previously said that he would only direct it if the script turned out right. Look what happened. That part of this scares me. Why would you need a rewrite if the script was good to begin with? So, I don’t know why there was a rewrite, but the facts add up to that reason.

As far as Chris Terrio writing, I’m cautiously optimistic that the movie will turn out good, but things aren’t adding up too positively.

What do you think about the script rewrite? Leave your thoughts in the comments
