‘The Karate Kid’ Sequel Series On YouTube Red

Sweep the leg Johnny!

A sequel to the 1984 movie, The Karate Kid, will appear on YouTube Red in 2018.

The sequel will be a 10-episode, half-hour series currently titled Cobra Kai. It will star Ralph Macchio and William Zabka from the original movies. The series picks up thirty years after the 1984 All-State Valkey Tournament. Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) reopens the Cobra Kai dojo, with that bringing back his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who is dealing with balancing his life without Mr. Miyagi.

I’m a huge fan of the first Karate Kid movie, so getting a sequel is very exciting. That rivalry between Daniel and Johnny is one of the most iconic of all time, bringing it back is a smart choice. As long as they don’t take themselves too seriously, the show could be really enjoyable. If they take an approach as a serious drama, then it might stray too far from the tone of the original movie. YouTube Red is an odd choice to put it.

Usually their content stars the YouTubers with a few low budget movies as well. YouTube could be trying to get into the same class of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. This is the first thing that legitimately makes me want to sign up for YouTube Red. Everything before this has looked like fan service to the fans of certain YouTubers, which there is nothing wrong with, but this looks really interesting.
